False windows in the rue des Calvys

On the façade of this building on rue des Calvys, you can see fake windows among the real ones.

This unusual feature is a reminder that in ancient times, taxes were calculated on openings (windows, doors).

The less fortunate, not wanting to admit their precarious situation to their neighbors, had false windows painted on the façade. To create the perfect trompe-l’œil, they even went so far as to glue on real hardware.
