Le Bosquet – Bonnard’s studio house

Pierre Bonnard a séjourné au Cannet de 1922 à 1947. En 1926 Le Bosquet devient sa maison sur les hauteurs de la ville du Cannet où il se retire définitivement de 1939 jusqu’à sa mort en 1947.

Around 1904, Pierre Bonnard also discovered the Midi, visiting Saint-Tropez, where his friends Édouard Vuillard and Ker-Xavier Roussel were staying. He visited Valtat and Signac, who in the same year received visits from Matisse and Derain on their way to Fauvism. Invited by Manguin, Bonnard returned to Saint-Tropez for a longer stay in the summer of 1909, which enabled him to paint a few canvases. He continued to alternate between Paris, Normandy and the Midi until 1914.

In 1922, Bonnard discovered Le Cannet. He was won over by this haven of peace, which met both the health requirements of his wife Marthe and his search for tranquillity, nature and height. In 1926, he bought a modest-looking house on Avenue Victoria from a gardener, and christened it “Le Bosquet”. He had the openings modified so that nature could be seen from everywhere inside.

He moved in in 1927, after making a few arrangements. The proximity of his friend Matisse, who was staying in Nice, and Lebasque’s presence in Le Cannet enabled him to maintain ongoing social and artistic contacts.

When the Second World War broke out, Pierre Bonnard retired permanently to Le Bosquet. It was in this “charming pigeon-house”, in the words of his friend Matisse, that Bonnard died on January 23, 1947. He was buried in the Notre-Dame des Anges cemetery beside his wife, who died in 1942.

On Pierre Bonnard’s death, his estate was the subject of a lawsuit that lasted more than 20 years. Since 1975, Pierre Bonnard’s house has been listed on the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques. In 2007, the house and its garden were listed.
