Church of Saint-Charles de Rocheville

“From the beginning of the 20th century, this neighborhood experienced a strong demographic boom. A situation that challenged the clergy: “(…) this real village that was forming could not benefit from any religious assistance”.

. Sainte Philomène church is a ¾-hour walk away. Faced with this situation, a committee was formed in 1911, under the aegis of Abbé Bech, mayor of Le Cannet, to build a church for “the moral good of the neighborhood”.

The site was chosen in front of the stone quarry, and the church naturally took the name of Saint Charles des Carrières. The foundation stone was laid on May 6, 1911, and it took just seven months of work before the church was officially inaugurated on December 17 of the same year.

Over the years, however, the Rochevillois population outgrew the building. In 1940, Abbé Galfré took the initiative of enlarging the church. Work began, and so as not to interrupt the continuity of worship, it was decided to build a new temple around the old one, without immediately demolishing it. Interrupted by the war, construction was completed immediately afterwards, in the 1950s. The enlargement of the church was a great feat, and a source of pride for many residents, not least a certain Mr. Simon, who built the dome of the new edifice”.
