Notre-Dame-Des-Anges chapel
The chapel was built under the will of Guillaume Calvy, a member of one of Le Cannet’s founding families.
It was thus built in the 16th century, in 1557, in “honor of God, Our Lady of the Angels and Saint-Crépin, in the vineyard, at a place called Vallon de Malleys” (Saint-Crépin is the patron saint of shoemakers, Guillaume Calvy’s profession).
The church consists of a rectangular nave with little natural light, and a porch opening onto the exterior. The entrance to the porch is a wide, round-arched bay with molded capitals. This porch is known as the “narthex”, as it enabled catechumens to attend religious services without entering the church – the same narthex was demolished at Chapelle Saint-Sauveur on November 20, 1884, to enlarge Rue Saint-Sauveur. Two low walls terminating in pillars frame a wooden gate that closes the porch at mid-height. The side façades feature three arches resting on molded cutaway pillars. An ochre coating covers the outside of the nave, while the arch and pillars are rendered in white.
Today, the chapel is used for Orthodox worship. After the war, the Chavanne de Dalmassy and Cosmétatos families, benefactors of the commune, held Christian and Orthodox religious services here.
To perpetuate this tradition, every year on September 8, the chapel hosts the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady the Virgin, with a service celebrated by the parish priest of Le Cannet in the presence of an archpriest from the Greek Orthodox Church of Nice.
